What about the 2014 games

Nobody could have predicted the problems that we have seen recently between Russia and Georgia, but hopefully this has passed us now. However, even during the Olympic Games we have seen some serious rivalry in sport between the two countries, which goes well beyond the normal behaviour.

This has prompted calls for the 2014 Winter Olympics to be withdrawn from Russia; this could be for one of two reasons.

Firstly, because of the conflict that has just occurred and has not been completely resolved.
Secondly, the location for the Winter Games is not that far from the region in question, which brings up all sorts of security questions.

However, should sport and national rivalry be looked at a being unusual? After all history, shows that sport and national pride walk hand in hand.
