Chocolate to become a luxury

If we carry on the way that we are going, that is to say using up all of our natural resources, increasing emissions and grabbing land for the production of bio fuels, then other products that we take for granted will become rarer.

One such product according to the Ghana-based Nature Conservation Research Council (NCRC) is chocolate. Around two thirds of the worlds cocoa beans come from West Africa, but the yields are falling which will cause concern for anyone who has a liking for the brown stuff.

The problem is that the farming of cocoa is not sustainable as it is a plant that grows extensively within the rain forests, but the farmers have to move on from area to area in order for the crop to grow, eventually they will run out of fresh land to cultivate and the production of cocoa will be threatened.
